City of High Point Boards and Commissions
How would you like to: • Improve your relationships with government staff? • Be ahead of the game, find out decisions being made before they are made? • Work your way up to high level boards or public office? • Make your voice heard?
If yes, then take an active role in your local government by volunteering to serve on a Board or Commission for the City of High Point. You will have the opportunity to directly shape the future of your city. Appointments are generally made in May. Sign up even if it looks like no seats are currently available. People resign and you need to have your name in the pot.
Board of Adjustments (BOA) hears requests for variances to the Development Ordinance. The Board meets on the 2nd Thursday of each month at 3 p.m. at City Hall.
Citizens Advisory Council (CAC) makes recommendations concerning how the city's federal Community Development Block Grant should be used. The Council meets on the 4th Thursday of each month at 6 p.m. at City Hall.
Economic Development Corporation (EDC) works to retain and expand existing business and industry, to attract new business to High Point, and to encourage job creation. The EDC meets on the 1st Wednesday of each month at 4 p.m. at City Hall.
Historic Preservation Commission hears property owners’ reque sts for demolition, new construction, and exterior alterations to structures and surrounding grounds within designated local historic districts. The Commission meets on the 2nd Thursday of each month at 5:30 at City Hall.
Housing Authority Board promotes affordable housing including Public Housing and Section 8 Housing. The Board meets monthly.
Human Relations Commission is responsible for encouraging understanding and goodwill, working toward the elimination of discrimination practices, and promoting mutual respect among all citizens through activities and celebrations. (e.g. Fair Housing Month) The Commission meets on the 2nd Thursday of each month at City Hall.
Library Board of Trustees determines library material selection criteria and use regulations and makes recommendations regarding library facilities. The Trustees meet on the 3rd Wednesday of each month.
Parks and Recreation Commission serves as representatives of the community and as advocates for various program facilities and staff for recreation related services. The commissions reviews budgets and recommend finding levels for the Parks & Recreation Dept. The Commission meets on the 2nd Monday of each month at 4 p.m. at the Culler Senior Center.
Planning and Zoning Commission (P&Z) makes recommendations to the City Council on rezonings, amendments to the city's Development Ordinance, conditional use permit requests, special use permit requests and street closings. The Commission meets monthly on Tuesday, nine days prior to City Council’s first regular meeting of the month at 6 p.m. at City Hall.
Theatre Advisory Board advises the Council and Theatre staff on budget, programming and other policy issues.
